BioArt Expositie door Studio Dáárheen
Nicole Spit exposeert met BioArt bij de Kunstfietsroute Castricum in de mooie ruimte aan de Dorpsstraat 23. Met haar BioArt reflecteert designer en kunstenaar Nicole Spit op de toekomst van de BioTechnologie. Met diverse speculatieve BioArt objecten geeft zij een visie op hoe de toekomstige biotechnologische producten er over 10 a 20 jaar uit zouden kunnen zien.
De soms huiveringwekkende of absurde kunstobjecten werden door Nicole van de nodige uitleg voorzien. Waarbij de ‘Levende Camera’ diverse nieuwe vrienden kreeg, bezoekers de ‘TandenMossel’ wel zagen zitten en de ‘BioWatch’ eigenlijk al als gewoon product werd geaccepteerd. Weer andere bezoekers raakten de tactiele ‘Levende Electronics’ terughoudend en dan verrast aan en kregen medelijden met de ‘LabRat’. Na uitleg waren vele bezoekers overtuigd van de positieve effecten van een bladgroentatoeage als extra dienst van een wellnesscentrum of kapper. Ook bij de geprinte organen was de acceptatiegrens al ruimschoots gepasseerd. Het Virtual Reality Implantaat werd met de nodige scepsis bekeken, terwijl de digitale wereld eigenlijk al bijna in ons is gekropen en velen al bijna de helft van hun ‘wakkertijd’ in deze wereld verblijven.

GMO workshop at the Waag Society
Waag Society is the first cultural institute wich obtained a S-I permit to give a GMO workshop. I was one of the 18 participants. During the workshop we will transform regular gut bacteria by introducing a gene from the bioluminescent jellyfish Aequorea victoria.
The pGLO plasmid is constructed with the jellyfish gene that encodes green fluorescent protein (GFP), an antibiotic-resistance gene that encodes β-lactamase protein, and the araC gene encoding a regulator protein that turns the GFP gene on and off. Bacteria transformed with pGLO plasmid are selected by ampicillin resistance; when induced to express GFP, the bugs glow fluorescent green under UV light.
The workshop takes place under strict procedures and follows the safety protocol.

Meeting with Agi Haines
Last Thursday I had a great conversation with Agi Haines, Speculative designer and winner of 2015 BAD Award (Bio- Art- en Design Award), at Mediamatic, center for Art and New Technology in Amsterdam. Mediamatic explores the possibilities and challenges that new technology offers art, design and society.
We exchanged ideas about our works and I really liked to talk with her as a like-minded person. I had already seen her interesting work at the exhibition ‘Playing Life’ at the Dutch Design Week, where she displayed her designed ‘circumventive organs’. The ability to replicate and print cells in complex structures could mean different cells with various functions could be put together in new ways to create new organs we would take millions of years to evolve naturally. Another intriguing project is ‘Transfigurations’ with it`s fascinating transformed babies. ‘Transfigurations’ depicts designs for potential body enhancements that have been surgically implemented to benefit the child. Each modification is put in place to solve a potential future problem for the baby, ranging from medical to environmental to social mobility issues. Agi has won a BAD award with her project ‘Drones with desires’ about a machine with inbuilt human memories. A drone controlled by your/her own brain.
